The Lash Diaries · Common questions

What lash extensions work best for hooded eyes?

The best lash extensions for hooded eyes are designed for how your eyes look open. A hooded lid can hide the base of your lashes, so curl or lift that clears the fold, and lengths chosen for the open-eye view, matter more than any generic lash map. If your natural lashes have good length, a lash lift is a strong option too.

Why do hooded eyes need a different approach?

A hooded lid folds down toward the lash line when your eyes are open. That fold can cover the base of your lashes, so lashes that look lovely with your eyes closed can half disappear when you look straight ahead.

Extensions are applied while your eyes are closed, but you wear them open. So the useful question isn't which lash map is "for hooded eyes." It's which curl and lengths will show above your fold when you're talking, driving or catching yourself in a mirror.

Designed with your eyes closed. A lash map is placed along the lash line while you lie back.

Seen with your eyes open. On a hooded lid the fold covers the base, so curl that lifts the lashes clear of it is what shows.

With the eyes open, a hooded lid can cover the base of the lashes, so curl and length are judged from the open-eye view.

What works best on hooded eyes?

Our notes on what we look at cover lid shape, and the short version is this: hooded lids often suit a lift or a curl that sits above the fold, so your lashes don't disappear under it. In practice, that comes down to four things:

  • Curl or lift that clears the fold. Lashes need to rise past the lid, not tuck under it.
  • Lengths chosen for the open-eye view. What counts is how much shows when you look ahead, not the longest length that fits.
  • Your natural lash direction. Lashes that grow straight or point down change how much curl you need.
  • Your brows. They frame the eye and change how open it looks (more below).

Is a lash lift good for hooded eyes?

Often, yes. A lift curls your own lashes up from the root, which is exactly what a hooded lid calls for: lashes that rise above the fold instead of sitting under it. Nothing is added, and there are no fills.

Desiree's menu describes it in one line:

Create a lift and curl to your natural lashes. Lasts 6–8 weeks.
From Desiree’s menu: Lash Lift

In a survey of women in their 20s to 50s, respondents said a lash lift changed their eye image and gave them clearer-looking eyes (Lee and Do, 2021). If you want length or fullness your lashes don't have, extensions are the better tool; our lift vs. extensions guide compares them side by side.

Are longer lashes better for hooded eyes?

Not automatically. The research on lash length measured protection, not looks: a review of eyelash biology reports that in airflow studies on a model eye, lashes about one-third of the eye's width protected the eye best (Aumond and Bitton, 2018). Longer isn't automatically better.

On a hooded eye, length only helps if it shows. Long lashes without enough curl can still sit under the fold. So ask for lengths chosen for your open-eye view, with the curl to carry them above the lid, rather than the longest length available.

The lash map is written on the under-eye pads while you lie back. On a hooded lid, it is chosen for how your eyes look open.

Do my brows change how open my eyes look?

Yes. In one experiment, lower brows made eyes look larger and higher brows made them look smaller; brow curvature didn't change perceived eye size, and eyes looked tilted the same way as the brows (Matsushita et al., 2015).

A second study found the same pull: low brows sitting closer to the eyes made the eyes look larger (Morikawa et al., 2015). These were perception studies, not lash appointments, but they're why we look at your brows and lashes together. If you're thinking about brows too, see the brow services and plan both at once.

How do I get the right lashes for hooded eyes?

Start by describing your open-eye view. Look straight ahead in a mirror with a relaxed face and notice how much of your lash line shows, which way your lashes point and what you'd like to see instead. If a past set drooped, flipped or looked too busy, say what changed and when.

I have hooded lids. With my eyes open, mostly the tips of my lashes show. I'd like them to be more visible without looking heavy.

Then book, with or without photos. After booking, you can start your pre-visit to send close-ups ahead for Desiree, with a note about the look you want. Either way, the set is designed at your appointment, around your lid and the look you described. How it works explains the steps.

If your eyes get sensitive or you've reacted to lash glue before, tell Desiree and ask her about a patch test 24 to 48 hours ahead; call or text before you book. If you ever notice redness, swelling, pain or a change in vision, contact Desiree and see a doctor.

Quick answers

Is there one best lash map for hooded eyes?
No. What matters most is curl or lift that carries your lashes above the fold, and lengths chosen for how your eyes look open. The set is designed at your appointment, around your lid, the direction your natural lashes grow and the look you want.
Is a lash lift or extensions better for hooded eyes?
If your natural lashes have good length, a lash lift is a strong choice: it curls them up above the fold and lasts six to eight weeks with no fills. If you want more length or fullness, choose extensions designed for your open-eye view, kept full with regular fills.
Should I get really long lashes if my eyes are hooded?
Longer isn't automatically better. In airflow studies, lashes about one-third of the eye's width protected the eye best (Aumond and Bitton, 2018); that measured protection, not looks. On hooded eyes, length only helps if it shows above the fold, so ask for curl and length planned for your open-eye view.
What photos should I send before a lash appointment for hooded eyes?
You don't need to take photos yourself: your phone camera takes a few close-ups for you. Try See what we see before booking for suggestions, or after booking send a pre-visit, where you can add a note about the look you want and anything you disliked in a past set.
